Selling SciFreak
Network April 23rd, 2007I know that it is probably a shock for a lot of my readers here to know that I am currently selling my prized science blog. And you are probably wondering why I would ever think about selling the blog. I am going to be completely honest with you…It became almost tedious to continue updating the blog. Unlike this blog and my other blog, scifreak really required me to do research. I am great at science, but it required research. And I think with my studies and the such, I didn’t have time to do that small amount of research required. This blog doesn’t require me to do research because all of the stuff just comes from mind. This blog post just came from mind. It was simple. For SciFreak, that wasn’t the case.
I am aiming for four hundred dollars, but for right now, I am currently at two hundred dollars. I’d love to get that up to four hundred, but if I can’t, I think I’d be happy with two hundred. That’d help with a lot of things and allow me to get some things set. Maybe I’d even get enough to buy a site that is already earing a small monthly amount. But, I am pretty against that right now, so it’d probably just be me creating content and growing the site before maybe flipping it. Who knows? Although I am selling SciFreak, Science Chats is going to become a big part of my time. I love science and that forum answers my questions rather than me having to do a lot of research. It’s fun. Anyways…To see the thread, click here.
It takes a lot out of me to write these blog posts. Buy me a beer to cool me off!

Well it sounds like a calculated decision. Having lots of blogs does spread you thin, and it is probably best to concentrate on the things that do not feel tedious. As I’ve mentioned before, the smartest thing is to rely on user generated content. Forums are user generated once they become popular, but in the short term, it still probably requires a lot more pushing from you. I don’t have any specific suggestions, but I would encourage you to develop sites that rely on users producing the bulk of the content. You’ll have to be creative to come up with ideas other than forums. Forums are still pretty labor intensive.

It’s a bit of a shame that you are selling something that you have worked so hard on. Personally I’d keep the site, remove all the date references and let a few dollars trickle in, you can always come back to it in the Summer when you have time on your hands. It’s coming up to finals week here at Cornell, seems to be lots of stressed out looking people!

Wish I could have seen it. I write posts on unusual / weird science, and offbeat news. I know what you mean about how much research it takes to put into the post.
All the best with this one!
Cheers!
