It appears that Viacom is finally attacking Google for YouTube. We’ve all been waiting for something like this to happen and let me tell you, it is definitely happening hard now. Viacom has decided that they are going to sue Google for one BILLION dollars for copyright problems. All of this content on YouTube is supposedly causing Viacom a ‘loss in profits.’ While I disagree, they are entitled to sue and they are going against one of the biggest online companies. It’ll be interesting to see what happens. Is it really Google’s fault about all of this? How can they police all of this illegal content? Google bought YouTube for over a billion dollars and it appears that it’ll really be costing them over two billion dollars.
Let’s think about something, though. What will the judge say? “Pay them a billion dollars, GOOGLE!” Or…Will the judge take a different approach to it? Will he say, “Google, you have six months to somehow clean YouTube up and get the content off of the site.” How is Google going to respond to all of this? Maybe we’ll see an agreement come from this that will give Viacom more than a billion dollars, but also not cost Google a billion dollars. It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for this. Normally, I don’t post about stats except at the end of the month because I really don’t think it is good to waste the time. A month can get so much better or so much worse and there’s really no reason to mention stats not even half a month having passed so far. However, I have to mention this because of its importance. SciFreak.com WILL be getting a forum. As you can remember here and here, I made mention that I would be giving a forum to my growing blog when it reached the 1000 uniques point. So far, on March 13th when I write this post, it has surpassed 1000 uniques.
So, now I need to decide what I want to do. I will be connecting the forum to the blog. I thought about making a domain name for it, but for right now, it’ll be connected to the blog. Truth is, SciFreak IS my network site. It’ll link to all the other science sites that I own in the future. I figure I’ll have one big forum and each additional blog that I make will link to that initial forum. That way, I can build one massive forum rather than a bunch of small forums. Good thinking or am I just a crazy person?
Now, I’m going to get a vBulletin license. Forget phpBB or any of that free software. I want vBulletin. However, I am going to work with the normal, default theme. It’s simple and that’s something I want. I don’t want something out there. I just want simple and plain for right now. In the future, I’ll invest in other themes for people to use if they want, but for right now, I think for a science site, the default vBulletin theme is a good choice. I might be wrong, but I think that it is good. Maybe I’ll add in some color to make it match SciFreak, but even that will be getting a makeover, so I don’t want to do anything just yet.
SciFreak will hopefully only grow more and more. I need to think about ad placement for the forum and I need to think about how to get a lot of members to go there. Do I mention in its own post a “FORUM” is made or do I just include a link in the blog roll and then include some links at the end of posts? One final thing that I need to worry about is content on the forum. I don’t want it to be a dead forum when people see it, so I have to think about what I want to before showing the world the forum. Should I just post on it myself with a few friends to get some content on it? Or, should I open it right when it’s finished with a contest and start posting like mad? I haven’t done forum work in a while, so I have some things to think about. Anyways…Let’s hope for a success on SciFreak’s forum when it opens!
