Adsense to Science Chats

I have been thinking since I opened the forum about whether I should add adsense to ScienceChats.com now or if I should wait for a little while to allow the site to get larger so that I can get more clicks right away. It was the same thinking that I had for SciFreak.com. I would wait for it to get larger and then bam, start to plug it in. However, I really think that if I were to plug it in, it would really start to earn. I don’t know…I know that I have a couple of ideas for advertising on the forum. I am going to, when the site gets larger, use Kontera. That’s a good way to make some decent money, at least, I think so. I may be wrong.

Might as well list what methods I have planned to make money. First I am going to plug in the adsense probably. At around the same time, I’ll probably put (in ad rotation), an azoogle or CJ banner that is selling items that are about to science. I’ll plug Kontera in once the site gets large enough to be accepted. All throughout, I am going to sell text links in that “sponsors” section. I probably won’t start selling those until the PR has jumped up and the number of members and posts has increased considerably. Finally, I’ll probably throw in a paid membership thing where if you pay, you get special features. Maybe a color to the username or something like that. These are just the ideas that I currently have for my ways to make money for the forum. I already intend on throwing Kontera onto my science blog because I really think it could return. Take care!

Go science!

This blog post doesn’t have a blog post sponsor because it isn’t fair for someone to buy something that is posted on a post that has nothing to do with my websites. And, I am sorry, but this post is going to be short due to the fact I am head high in notes and my book on Chemistry. But, it inspired me to make a post. Go science! I really have to say that while I want to shoot myself right now, while I keep looking over at my girlfriend wishing I could lay with her rather than do this and while I am starving, I really love it. It’s an extremely stressful major, but I love it. Everything about it is great except for the slightly depressing fact that for the rest of my life, as a scientist that is, I will never prove anything. I will only support things.

That sounds depressing, but in reality, that’s how a hypothesis works. You can only support it. If anyone that reads this blog, though, has not chosen a major yet for college, please think about science. It’s a really fulfilling career and while I am only a student, every day, I learn something new that I know I will use in the future. Who can say that about every other major? Sure, a lot of majors are like that, but then some are not. I learn something new everyday and it is so great. I guess this post was inspired by my notes and the fact I have a huge exam tomorrow. I love science even though it makes me crazy. It really is great. Take care! And sorry for the random post. :p

Contest on Science Chats

So, I decided that it was time to really get a contest going on Science Chats. If I want to get the forum to grow, I need to really get some things rolling on the site. I can’t keep posting all the threads on the site. If I am the sole contributor, I don’t know how long the forum can keep growing. My brain needs at least a day to recharge, but being an admin doesn’t give you that. BUT! I am not complaining. I am just saying that it is difficult and I really could use the help in getting threads started. But, the good thing is that the contest should help.

I gave three weeks for the contest to last. It’ll end three weeks from today and I hope that with this time, enough threads and posts will be made that the forum can begin running itself. At least that way, I can really focus on getting more things for the forum. I want to add an arcade for it and I want to add an articles section. I want to add a lot to the forum in the hopes of really making it big, but if I have to post every single thread to get conversations rolling, I won’t ever get anywhere. But, I have found a way that should help!

I am offering a one year subscription to Popular Science. If they don’t want that, they can get the same price for an amazon.com giftcard. For second prize, I will be giving a $10.00 giftcard to Amazon.com. I figure that this will make people really start working because there is a second place prize which increases their chances of winning. The contest is a posting/referral/article writing contest. Basically, you get points for writing posts, making threads, referring members, putting links to the site, writing articles AND you get points for every post someone you refer posts. So, it’s really going to work, I hope. If you’re interested in seeing the rules, please go here.

The Forum

I can say that my forum is doing rather well, but things are slow. I’ve always wondered how many people honestly love science. When I joined myspace, I found that a lot of people really do love it. But the problem is, no one really wants to join. I mean, they like the thought of a place to chat about science, but then they don’t join. And if they join, they don’t post any new threads. It’s difficult to make a successful forum when you are the one that has created most of the threads. Since I haven’t gotten paid yet, I can’t really put my contest up. Well, I could, but…Hmm…Now that I write this post, I have begun to think about ways to start more posting.

I know that my forum can get large. It offers a calm place for people to talk about science, the skin looks relaxing and there is a genuine love for the topic. However, what I also know is that people don’t like joining a forum that doesn’t have a lot of posts. I’ve been wondering if I should maybe get a moderator with the sole task of adding more threads and the such. When Christmas time comes, I’ll give him a gift or something as a thank you, but it would be an unpaid job. What do you think? Do you think I should add a moderator soon so that I can get an increase in threads? Maybe include it as a job title? Also…Do you think that adding an article section would be good or keep that to my other individual blogs I will make in the future? If you love science, check out the forum.

Finding Time

I find the hardest part about being me is getting everything done in the day. I wish I could make the day have thirty six hours, or that I only needed two hours of sleep. If I could do that, I think that life would become a hell of a lot easier. I know, I know, to become great at something, life won’t be easy. But, I have to say that it is very difficult getting everything done. I suppose the biggest thing is that I am in a very difficult major, I am trying to create a web empire and I may have stretched a little thin too fast and I also have a girlfriend. I have neglected my science blog for a while now and I know that I need to get things back on the roll for that. I’ve seen a drop in adsense earnings because of it, but I have figured out a plan to get things to work.

The key, that I have figured out, is writing my posts in the morning. Rather than doing them at night, I need to do them in the morning. My problem is that I begin to talk online and then get side tracked. If I were to get up earlier in the day, not only could I focus on my blog posts in the morning, I could also get more studying done so the night could be spent with the girlfriend and more work online. My problem is that I cruise the internet a little too much. I get side tracked. I might have a slight case of ADD. But, the point is: if I can post in the morning, I will get more people reading the post that day and I’ll also get to focus on other work as well. And, since I’ll have more time to study as well, my Mom will be happy too. Take care!

Feel Free to Advertise

What does my title mean, you may be asking? Well, it is rather simple. As a webmaster, always feel free to advertise. Your job, whether you run a content website with adsense on it, run an affiliate site, or run a site that you’re selling your own products on, IS to sell yourself. Why do we go to ebay when there are other auction websites around? Because they sold themselves. Why do we use Google rather than MSN? Because they sold themselves. Advertising is key and you are more than welcome to do it when ever! Now, this post has two descriptions of advertising. The first, as I’ve mentioned, is always sell yourself. Don’t be afraid when you’re sending a message to a friend on myspace to include a link to your arcade. They’re your friends…They should WANT you to succeed and if a mild link plug in is going to help you out, then who would complain? I harass my friends to go to my arcade all the time…And sometimes it works. So, always sell yourself.

Advertising on your website. Most people on the internet don’t mind advertising. They don’t mind a link at the top of a post, don’t mind adsense thrown in or other methods. Then there are some that do. I will tell you now that the number that mind it are the minority compared to those that don’t mind it. If those that didn’t mind it DID mind it, then there’d be no online money making. But, the fact that most people don’t mind it means that most people just don’t care. Sure, you’ll get a person here or there that says, “why are you making money that way by putting links on the top of your post.” And I tell them. Because I can. This is my website. If I want to throw an affiliate banner somewhere along with an adsense banner somewhere else and then throw in a banner to sell per week and then sell links and put stuff all over my blog, I can. What I am trying to say is that feel free to advertise. If you’re trying to make money and this is your way of life, DO IT RIGHT! Make money. Don’t let someone tell you, “your links in your blog posts irk me.” I’ve received a few people telling me that and I just brush it off. If they don’t like it, they don’t need to read.

My point is this…Feel free to advertise. Feel free to go around and advertise what you want to advertise. If you run a website, ADVERTISE IT! If you run a website, PUBLISH ADS ON IT! Make money on your website. Don’t let people tell you that you shouldn’t put links in your blog posts or that you shouldn’t put so many different ads. Is it making you money? Are people clicking on it? If so, then do it! Chances are, people that are telling you not to do something are just envious of your wealth and will do it once they get their site larger. Just remember…You own your website. Run it like you own your website.

Writing Reviews on This Site

This blog post is proudly sponsored by: Buying and Selling on eBay.

Now that I have my forum up and running (it’s growing slowly, we’ll see how it does in a week), I have decided to decided that I am going to need to try another slow increase of wealth. I need money to invest in my forum. Other than my studies and my girlfriend, that website is one of the most important things. And yeah, my studies are most important. This blog is zerotomed.com. I want to become a doctor. Anyways…So, I have been trying to figure out what I can do to make some money from this blog in an effort to reinvest it into my forum. And then it dawned on me…

I know that even a lot of personal blogs write a bunch of reviews. I don’t know what kind of reviews I’d write, but even if I could write two or three a week and that’s it, I’d get quite a bit of money. My only worry is that if I do too many of them, I will begin to lose some of my readers. I know that’s a risk, but I really could use the money. I could use it to invest in my websites and I could use it for personal reasons. Anyways…I don’t know if I am going to do it, but I am definitely looking into it. I could really use the money, that much is for sure. Back to work to the forum! Later.

Science Forum is Open

I finally got around to opening my newest site. A forum. It is not on the SciFreak.com domain as I had hoped. Instead, it is on another domain name. I bought it and it is open. I am excited about it, but slightly upset that the skins are still not working. One of the staff of the place where I purchased the skin is looking into it, but I don’t know what they will find. Anyways, I am excited to say that it is open and I have started posting on it. I installed a product that will hopefully make more people sign up, but I am not sure how good it is going to do just yet. I will make a post about my favorite vB mods and stuff when I get more.

I figured out what kind of contest I am going to do. It’ll be some sort of science magazine subscription. I am not sure what exactly I want to do, but it might be a generic posting/referral contest. I might make an article thing as well so that I can begin hording articles for my biology blog that I intend on making in the future. I haven’t figured out the number of points I want to make each thing, but you can bet that in the next couple of days, I’ll have a definite idea. I am not sure if I am going to do a science magazine subscription or something else, but it will be about science. When I get more money, my second contest will probably be worth more. Anyways…Want to see the forum? Really? Are you sure? Okay! ScienceChats.com!

Looking for a VPS

Well, I don’t know if it is a good thing or a bad thing when you get an e-mail saying that you have used up almost all of your disk space. Probably a good thing because it means that you’re growing. That is, of course, you’re making money from your websites. If you’re not making money, then that is a very bad thing and could cause immediate doom to your web empire. So, what does that mean? It means that you either need to sell of a couple of sites or invest in better hosting. So, that means that I can upgrade on my hosting plan and pay a couple of dollars more for more disk space and hosting or I can make a big jump and go right to a VPS. I think I want a VPS.

Now, I am a complete newbie when it comes to anything about web hosting. I tried to make a company once, but I was just a moron about it and it flopped. I know that a VPS is like shared hosting, but it offers you a lot more control over your websites. At least, that’s what I was taught. Maybe I am wrong. What I do know is that I would like to make the jump. Now, my budget is not that great, but it is something. Because of all the links that I have sold on this blog and the consistency of people coming back for more, I know that I will be fully capable of affording a VPS. However, I don’t want to go over the top and start spending loads of cash yet because I don’t have it. Because of that, I am looking for a VPS that I can maybe get for under $50.00 a month. If, of course, that is impossible, I am up for suggestions. I know that people don’t comment all the time, but I could really use some advice here on where to get a VPS. I appreciate it.

Science Forum

I have finally put together my science forum. I got help with installing the forum. However, the only thing that is different than my plan is that I am not using forum.scifreak.com. Instead, I purchased a domain name for the forum. I just think that it might be a bit easier to remember if it has its own domain name. I won’t be putting up a link to the forum just yet because I have a lot of work to do on it. However, if anyone does have such a great interest in science that they want to throw some advice at me and want to see what the forum looks like, leave a comment. I have no problem showing a few people, but the forum is not ready for advertising.

The biggest thing I need to think about is what sort of contest I want to do. I know that contests do offer a bit of an incentive to post a lot in the beginning if done correctly. But, I am not sure what sort of contest I should have or what I should offer as a prize. I know that I wanted to offer something similar to what happened on Earners Forum. They offered a free t-shirt that said something about Earners Forum when they got to five hundred posts. It’s a great incentive to get people to post a lot because they want the free t-shirt. I wouldn’t mind dishing the money out for t-shirts. I’ve also been thinking about making pens that have the URL on it as well to offer for maybe two hundred and fifty posts. It costs money, but it’ll really help in getting the forum flowing fast and hard and isn’t that the most important thing? Look for a post next week about the science forum AND the URL!
